Poland’s Digital Transformation: How Mobile-First Behaviours, Digital Payments and Trusted Ecosystems Are Shaping the Next Generation of Digital Services Poland’s Digital Transformation: How Mobile-First Behaviours, Digital Payments and Trusted Ecosystems Are Shaping the Next Generation of Digital Services

Poland has become one of Europe's most dynamic digital markets, driven by mobile-first behaviours, seamless digital payment adoption and rapidly evolving customer expectations. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in the market, Robert Ciosek, Sales & Marketing Director in Poland, explains why the country continues to stand out as a prime environment for launching new digital services across payments, subscriptions, mobile communication and app-based experiences.

Poland: One of Europe’s Fastest-Moving Digital Ecosystems

Over the past two decades, I have seen Poland evolve from a market experimenting with Premium SMS and mobile content into one where digital services are part of everyday life. Today, consumers use their smartphones to access entertainment, manage subscriptions, pay for services and interact with brands with the expectation that every experience will be instant, intuitive and secure.

What makes Poland unique, in my view, is not only the speed of digital adoption but also consumers’ willingness to embrace new behaviours whenever they deliver genuine convenience. At the same time, the market is becoming more digital, more automated and more regulated. These three forces are reshaping how digital services are designed, monetized and delivered in the region.

Mobile-First Behaviours Are Reshaping Everyday Digital Consumption

Subscription Has Become an Everyday Consumption Model

One of the biggest shifts I have observed in Poland is the widespread adoption of subscription-based consumption. Initially driven by fast-growing video-on-demand platforms such as Netflix, Canal+, Player and other streaming services, subscriptions have gradually expanded to premium news content through local services like Gazeta.pl Premium and Onet Premium, and then well beyond traditional digital services such as video, gaming and news content to include more conventional offerings, from mobility services to car washes and maintenance packages.

Consumers increasingly value convenience, predictable spending and instant access over ownership. As a result, subscription has become a natural way of consuming digital services, rewarding providers that continuously deliver value rather than one-off transactions.

Smartphones Have Become the Interface for Everyday Services

The smartphone has become the central interface for everyday life. Whether buying public transport or rail tickets, paying for parking, booking ride-hailing services, shopping online or accessing digital subscriptions, consumers increasingly expect every interaction to happen through a seamless mobile experience.

This transformation is particularly visible in mobility, where smartphones have become a primary gateway to app-based transport and urban services. Users no longer think in terms of separate apps, payments or channels—they simply expect frictionless experiences that fit naturally into their daily routines. One example is our cooperation with SkyCash, one of Poland’s leading mobility applications, through which users can pay for parking and purchase public transport tickets using DCB.

Digital Payments Are Powering the Next Stage of Digital Services

Digital payments are no longer simply facilitating transactions—they are enabling entirely new digital services and customer experiences.

Poland has become one of Europe’s most advanced cashless markets. BLIK, Poland’s domestic instant mobile payment system, has become the default payment method for many online and mobile purchases, while payment cards remain essential. At the same time, Direct Carrier Billing continues to play a complementary role for digital content, subscriptions, gaming and micropayments, offering consumers a simple and trusted purchasing experience.

What makes this evolution particularly interesting is the growing convergence between payments, subscriptions and mobile commerce. In my view, this is where some of the most innovative business models are currently emerging in Poland.

The Next Evolution of Payments

Looking ahead, I believe three forces will shape the next phase of the market: stronger regulation, growing expectations for simplicity and security, and deeper integration between payments and digital services.

Consumers increasingly expect payments to become simple, secure and almost invisible within the purchasing journey. Success will therefore depend on orchestrating multiple payment methods—including DCB, local fast-growing digital payment schemes such as BLIK—according to customer preferences and use cases, rather than promoting a single solution.

Telecom operators are uniquely positioned to support this evolution. Their trusted customer relationships, billing infrastructure and communication channels make them strategic partners for developing new payment models and digital services.

From my perspective, Poland market reflects a broader global trend. Digital payments have become a strategic differentiator rather than a simple checkout function. The strongest digital ecosystems orchestrate multiple payment methods to deliver seamless customer experiences, increasingly extending beyond entertainment into everyday services such as mobility, transport, parking and ticketing.

Telecom Operators Are Becoming Digital Service Platforms

From Connectivity Providers to Digital Ecosystems

One of the biggest transformations I have observed is the evolution of telecom operators from connectivity providers into broader digital service platforms. Today, they combine mobile and fibre services with streaming, cybersecurity, loyalty programmes and digital lifestyle services to create greater customer value and strengthen retention.

Poland’s mature and highly competitive telecom market has been a strong catalyst for this evolution. With four major operators—Orange, Play, T-Mobile and Plus—competition is no longer driven solely by network quality or pricing. Instead, operators are increasingly differentiating through broader digital ecosystems, richer customer experiences and new communication channels that extend well beyond connectivity.

Operators Are Becoming Partners in New Digital Service Models

Beyond connectivity, operators bring trusted customer relationships, billing capabilities and communication channels that simplify service activation and customer onboarding. This positions them as strategic partners for digital service providers developing new monetization models. Throughout my experience in Poland, I have seen how close collaboration between operators and partners accelerates innovation and customer adoption.

RCS Opens a New Chapter in Customer Engagement

Another development I find particularly promising is Rich Communication Services (RCS). By enabling rich, native and interactive conversations directly within the smartphone messaging application, RCS is opening new opportunities across e-commerce, finance, telecom, entertainment, subscriptions, loyalty programmes and customer service.

Although still at an early stage in Poland, I believe RCS is set to become an important brand-to-consumer communication channel over the next two years.

At Digital Virgo, we do see RCS as the next generation of business messaging. Our end-to-end expertise combines operator integrations, campaign orchestration and omnichannel engagement to help operators and brands deploy scalable conversational experiences that strengthen engagement, conversion and long-term value.

Innovation Must Keep Pace with Regulation

Innovation alone is no longer enough. As EU regulations such as NIS2, PSD3, the AI Act and new telecommunications legislation reshape the market, companies must invest simultaneously in innovation, security and compliance.

In Poland, this evolution is reinforced by an active regulatory environment where authorities such as UKE and UOKiK place a strong emphasis on consumer protection. While this raises expectations around transparency, cybersecurity and responsible digital practices, it also strengthens trust in digital services. As this is increasing operational complexity, I also believe trust is one of the strongest competitive differentiators.

At Digital Virgo, we believe sustainable ecosystem growth starts with customer satisfaction across the entire journey. Responsible acquisition, transparent communication, secure transactions, compliant monetization, proactive customer care and continuous monitoring from pre to post-purchase are key to building long-term consumer and partner trust.

Building Sustainable Growth: 25 Years of Digital Transformation in Poland

Innovation Works When It Solves Everyday Needs

Having operated in the Polish market since 2000 has given Digital Virgo a unique perspective on its digital transformation—from Premium SMS, TV voting and promotional lotteries to Direct Carrier Billing, premium digital content, and modern mobility services.

Despite changing technologies, one lesson has remained constant: innovation succeeds when it solves everyday needs.

Long-Term Partnerships Create Scalable Digital Ecosystems

Another lesson is that sustainable innovation depends on long-term collaboration.

Our long-standing partnership with T-Mobile Poland has fos instance evolved alongside changing technologies and customer expectations—from Premium SMS services to this year’s Magenta Moments Birthday Lottery celebrating T-Mobile Poland’s 30th anniversary. Another example is the Direct Carrier Billing standard we developed jointly with Polish telecom operators, establishing both the technical and operational foundations of today’s DCB ecosystem. Together, these long-term partnerships illustrate how collaboration drives continuous innovation, scalable digital services and sustainable growth.

Local Relevance Drives Adoption

The Polish market has consistently shown that successful digital services combine convenience, trusted payments, simple customer journeys, local consumer habits and close operator partnerships. These principles continue to drive adoption and point to where the next wave of growth is emerging.

Where the Next Growth Opportunities Will Emerge

Premium Digital Services Will Continue to Expand

I believe the strongest opportunities will continue to emerge around streaming, gaming, premium digital content, subscriptions and personalised services.

The companies best positioned to capture this growth will be those capable of combining compelling content or services with simple monetisation, locally relevant customer experiences and convenient payment models.

Frictionless Monetisation Will Become a Competitive Advantage

Consumers increasingly expect seamless purchasing journeys. DCB, local payment methods such as digital wallets will increasingly work together to deliver simple, mobile-first payment experiences.

RCS Could Become the Next Growth Engine

I also expect RCS to become one of the next major growth engines for Poland’s digital ecosystem. By enabling richer, conversational customer interactions across e-commerce, finance, telecom, entertainment, subscriptions and loyalty programmes, RCS is expanding the possibilities of mobile communication, digital advertising and personalised marketing.

As adoption accelerates, I believe RCS-based campaigns will become one of the most promising growth areas in Poland’s digital ecosystem, helping brands deliver more engaging customer experiences while improving acquisition, conversion and long-term loyalty.

Balancing Innovation, Compliance and Trust Will Be the Main Challenge

The greatest challenge will be balancing innovation with compliance and customer trust. Organisations that treat security and transparency as competitive differentiators will be best positioned for sustainable growth.

What’s Next for Poland’s Digital Economy?

Looking ahead, I expect Poland to become even more mobile-first. AI will progressively transform customer journeys, subscription and bundled ecosystems will continue to expand, payments will become increasingly seamless and embedded around BLIK for everyday transactions, while DCB will retain a strong niche in digital content and unbanked segments. At the same time, regulations such as NIS2, PSD3 and the updated telecommunications law will further raise the bar for compliance and trust.

Ultimately, the companies best positioned to lead Poland’s next digital chapter will be those capable of combining premium digital services, seamless payment experiences, trusted customer relationships and locally relevant innovation. That, in my view, is what sustainable digital transformation truly means.
